NJ MAP is an interactive atlas for ecological resources, environmental education and sustainable communities. The Geospatial Research Lab at Rowan University’s Department of Geography, Planning and Sustainability created this free online map viewer to connect NJ citizens, municipalities and advocacy groups with real time geospatial tools to support their planning and conservation efforts.
Organized into a suite of publicly available geospatial tools, each NJ MAP project focuses on a specific New Jersey environmental, land use and sustainability issue. Intended users include Sustainable Jersey Green Teams, municipal planning boards, environmental commissions, land trusts, watershed organizations and concerned citizens among others. The NJ MAP vision is to make statewide GIS data relatable and easy to understand.

Katrina has worked in the Geospatial Research Lab since 2011. She has a passion for supporting environmental advocacy efforts and using GIS to tackle a myriad of NJ specific topics including affordable housing, open space preservation, conservation, land stewardship and land use change. Serving as the Director of the NJ MAP project, Katrina oversees geospatial research projects from start to finish.
Web Mapping Specialist
Makenzie first started working on the NJ MAP project as a GIS intern during her undergraduate degree at Rowan University. She is currently enrolled in a master’s degree program in urban and regional planning.
GIS Technician and Support Specialist
Mike works full-time for Rowan University’s Department of Geography, Planning, & Sustainability, of which NJ MAP and the GeoLab are a part. While he had his start on the NJ MAP team as a student intern during his undergrad, he now offers technical support from his position within the department. This includes front and back-end web development, management of cloud service infrastructure, team onboarding, and occasionally video tutorial production.
Graduate Student Intern
Brendan is a student at Rowan University working on a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning. Previously, Brendan has obtained his BS in Geographic Information Systems and a BA in Environmental and Sustainability Studies from Rowan. He has worked as an intern for NJ MAP since 2021 where he performs various GIS tasks such as digitizing land use/land cover or updating data layers across the NJ MAP web maps. He hopes to use his GIS skills to help plan for a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
